PanthersTop Port Chester in Elmsford Classic

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – The Pleasantville Panthers girls’ basketball team won its first game of the young season Saturday, stopping Port Chester 57-33 in the consolation game of the Elmsford Classic Basketball tournament at Hamilton High School.

Pleasantville (1-2) was led by Zaria Cobbs, who scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and was a force under the backboard on defense and was named to the All-Tournament team. Port Chester fell to 0-3.

“I’m working on being a better rebounder and defensive player,” said Cobbs, who scored 13 points in Thursday’s opening round loss to Woodlands. “We are learning how to play together and to limit our mistakes in games.”

D’Angela Covington led Port Chester in scoring with 12 points and also grabbed a dozen rebounds, while teammate Viridiana VidalesCoyt was named to All-Tournament team for her outstanding play.

“We’re getting better and better and are working on getting back on defense and not missing easy shots,” Covington said. “The defense has to be better to win games.”

Pleasantville’s first-year coach Myndi Hill won her first game as Panthers coach and looked forward to an improving team.

“We learn from what we do right and what we do wrong in these games,” Hill told the Panthers following the game. “We played better post defense and got pressure from our guards.  It was a good overall performance.”
