Hudson River Drowning Victim ID'd

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The 43-year-old man from Sleepy Hollow who drowned in the Hudson River at Pierson Park at the end of West Main Street Friday has been identified.

William Cabrera entered the water and proceeded to swim away from the shore. After going about 50 feet, he turned and started to come back when he became submerged in the water, police said.

When resurfaced, he was unconscious and was taken to the shoreline by another man. Police received a 911 call about the incident at 1:29 p.m. 

Cabrera resided at College Avenue in Sleepy Hollow, less than a mile from Pierson Park.

Police provided medical assistance but Cabrera was unconscious and not breathing. He was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:29 p.m., police said.

Police said the death appears to be accidental and the case was referred to the Westchester County Medical Examiner. 

The fire department and Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance also responded.
