Ex-Professor Revisits Old Mount Vernon Stomping Grounds With City's Mayor

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Retired history professor and philanthropist Elihu Rose spent much of his formative years as a Mount Vernon resident, but he hadn't returned home in decades prior to a day trip made in July.

Rose met with Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas to tour his old stomping grounds. What Rose found with Thomas was more than just a trip down memory lane.

Thomas showed Rose a city still showing the scars from economic decline. Beyond the scars, Thomas also showed Rose corners of the city where hope is once again on the rise, and healing and growth are well under way.

The tour began at St. Paul's Church, a national historic site, and continued to Memorial Field and downtown Mount Vernon.

Rose has taught at Yale and Columbia universities, the University of Maryland and NYU.

Thomas as the youngest mayor in city history in January when he was inaugurated at age 32.
