PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Property taxes in Pleasantville and around Westchester continue to rise despite the grumblings of residents. However, the property taxes of the average resident in Pleasantville is a mere sliver compared to Con Edison's village property tax bill this year of $574,561.75, more than the next four highest taxpayers in Pleasantville combined.
Jason Hoffman with Pleasantville's Tax Collection Office said Con Ed and their properties on four locations around the village are a staple atop the list of highest taxpayers in Pleasantville.
"The list hasn't really changed in quite some time," Hoffman said.
Hoffman said Con Edison's combined properties, which are used as utility and mechanical locations, are assessed at about $6 million.
One new member on the list is Zwilling J.A. Henckels. In December of 2011, Henckels agreed to purchase the vacant MLA warehouse building on Marble Avenue and move its headquarters there from its current location in Hawthorne. This year, Henckels will pay $137,638.01 in taxes for that property, the second highest in the village. The knife company has yet to move into the building.
Representatives from both Con Ed and Henckels were not immediately available for comment.
This year, the average property tax paid to the village of Pleasantville is $3,683. That number is up from $3,580 in 2012. In 2009, the average property tax was $3,208.
Residents of Pleasantville also pay taxes to the town of Mount Pleasant. Property taxes in Mount Pleasant vary depending on which of the eight school districts within Mount Pleasant the property is located in. For those in the town of Mount Pleasant who live within the boundaries of the Pleasantville Union Free School District, the main district in the village of Pleasantville, the 2012-13 tax rate is $1,370.06 per thousand. On an averaged-assessed home in this district, it would be around $11,000 a year in property taxes in addition to village.
