NBC will find a new role for Williams, who will not return as anchorman and managing editor of "NBC Nightly News," CNN reported, citing sources with knowledge of the plan. Williams could end up on ratings challenged MSNBC, the report said.

An announcement on the details of the new job for Williams could come as early as Thursday, CNN said.

Williams has been suspended without pay since February after the anchorman admitted on air that he had misrepresented his role in a mission in Iraq in 2003. He claimed he had been aboard a helicopter that was forced down by a rocket-propelled grenade, which was not true. NBC was investigating other reports of the anchorman stretching the truth.
