The tournament, made famous in the documentary "Wordplay," is directed by Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor at the New York Times. It is the oldest and largest crossword competition in the country.

Speaking of "Wordplay," here's a crossword clue for those in the know: It's an eight-letter word for the tournament's location in the documentary that is sometimes known as The City That Works. (Answer at end!)

The competition consists of eight original crossword puzzles created just for the event. Accuracy and speed both count. Prizes are awarded in more than 20 categories, including a $5,000 grand prize.

The competition begins Saturday morning and concludes Sunday. A reception with fun and games is held beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

Feeling lucky and good with words? It's not too late to attend. Participants can register online or at the door at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott. Sign in begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The costs vary depending on level of participation so check online.

Did you get it right? The previous home of the tournament was Stamford.
