The Pleasantville Fire Department has been holding its Firemans Day Parade for over 70 years and that annual tradition continued Friday night in Pleasantville. Bob Murphy, a member of the department since 1971, has been the parade director for every parade since 1985.
The village fire department, which is all volunteer, began in 1894 when Pioneer Engine Company #1 was founded at its current fire department headquarters on 75 Washington Avenue.
We enjoy it every year, Murphy said. Its nice to see the kids waving as we walk by.
The fire department has been preparing for this parade for the past few weeks, taking time to wash and wax the vehicles in their downtime between calls.
Ten people took the day off today to help set everything up, said assistant chief Manny Colmenares. Without them this day would not be possible.
The department is always looking for volunteers, starting with the Junior Corps at age 16.
Every firefighter must take a 94 hour training course, which is the minimum, Murphy said. Then, the kids train with the companies more and more.
The volunteers are a valuable resource to us, Colemanares said.
At 18, volunteers can join any four of the companies (engine, hook & ladder, hose and truck) of the department.
