More than 178,000 interviews nationwide were conducted to examine Americans’ perceptions on topics such as physical and emotional health, healthy behaviors, work environment, social and community factors, financial security, and access to necessities such as food, shelter and health care.

New York's well-being index was a 65.5, well behind the No. 1 overall state, North Dakota, which had an index of 70.4, according to the poll.

South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Montana rounded out the top five while Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and West Virginia were ranked as the bottom five states, respectively.
