New Book By Pleasantville's Stephen Apkon Hits Shelves

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A new book by Pleasantville native Stephen Apkon that includes a foreword by Hollywood director Martin Scorsese was published Tuesday, titled "The Age of the Image: Redefining Literacy in a World of Screens."

This short film was made for "The Age of the Image," a book by Pleasantville resident Stephen Apkon, founder of the Jacob Burns Film Center.

Apkon, founder and executive director of Pleasantville’s Jacob Burns Film Center, was slated to talk about his book in an NPR interview on Wednesday at 11:25 a.m.

In the book’s foreword, Scorsese wrote: "'The Age of the Image' lays out the tools we need to cultivate our awareness of and attention to every message and every gesture, artistic or opportunistic, expressed in print or in pixels. It's not just a plea for literacy, but a wonderful road map and guide for how it can be taught and nurtured."

Apkon's book “draws on the history of literacy, on the science of how storytelling works on the human brain, and on the value of literacy in real-world situations, and argues that now is the time to transform the way we teach, create, and communicate so that we can all step forward together into a rich and stimulating future,” his website said.

A short film, featured above, was made for the book by Daniel Liss. "The Age of the Image" is published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. It is available locally at The Village Bookstore in Pleasantville, as well as on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Indiebound and iTunes.
