A global day of donating time, skills, money or goods, #GivingTuesday is set aside so people will be encouraged to give back to the community. It's also the unofficial launch of the charitable giving season nonprofits rely upon for a large portion of their annual total donations, according GivingTuesday's website.

Last year, over 700,000 people donated online in over 70 countries raising $116 million nationwide, said to Lisa Tomasi, CEO of YouGiveGoods.

"From the strong response to GivingTuesday, it is clear that people are ready to push back on the retail message of 'spend, spend, spend' and channel the feeling of the season to 'give, give, give.' GivingTuesday is poised to see even greater growth this year, which is so exciting on many levels," Tomasi said. "The success translates into more people (and animals) getting the help they need to live a better life."

The movement started as an idea at the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City five years ago and has since grown into a national effort that helps on a global level.

"GivingTuesday really tapped into the power of social media. The message, the timing and the purpose seem to be a perfect storm allowing it to grow in a way that could not have been orchestrated by the best team of marketers" said Tomasi.

Tomasi's YouGiveGoods is dedicated to making it easier for people to give goods by connecting giving to needs. Using an online platform, YouGiveGoods facilitates the donation of needed goods to charities instead of making a cash donation.

The #GivingTuesday website offers ideas, tools and locations for anyone wanting to get involved.
