The cost of living index created by StartClass took into account several factors when calculating cost of living including:

  • Housing
  • Taxes
  • Healthcare
  • Childcare
  • Transportation
  • Other necessities (food, etc.)

All factors were graded and based on an index with a score of 100 being average; meaning an index of 110 would indicate that cost of living in a given area is 10 percent higher than the national average.

Westchester County had an index of 149. None of the indices fell below the national average. Only transportation came close with an index of 105. New York State overall had an index of 120, Business Insider said.

Westchester's fifth-place ranking made it more expensive than other neigboring areas, including: Danbury (Rank: 11, Index: 140) and New York City Metro (Rank: 8, Index: 144), according to Business Insider.
