Sunshine Children's Home Helps Medically Complex

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Sunshine Children's Home and Rehab Center helps those with a range of medical needs by giving them a home away from home so they can grow and recover. In fact, many of the children up to 18 years of age who are treated there find a second family as well.

The welcoming setting at Sunshine Children's Home encourages kids who require post-acute medical care or rehabilitative therapy to embody an active, healthy lifestyle. "We have activities and programs on-site that meet all our children's needs, including dance therapy, massage therapy, music therapy and animal therapy," said Executive Director Linda Mosiello. "We try to provide them almost anything they enjoy in an effort to help them work towards a normal lifestyle," said Mosiello.

Having the children on site with an experienced medical team is also beneficial since staff can respond to any issues with residents immediately as opposed to at home, where they might be in and out of the emergency room. Some of the medical issues the team can address include post-surgical rehabilitation, feeding disorders, pre-transplant and post-transplant care, genetic disorders, diabetes and more.

In addition to medical care, the kids are able to learn through goal-setting activities and group field trips. "It’s kind of building a life for them; we are more of a home than a hospital. We strive to create a typical day in the life of a child," said Mosiello.

Sunshine Children's Home works with the families of their residents too, in order to learn more about the personalities of their patients so they can create a daily plan for them as they work towards recovery. "We want to become an extended family by creating a second home for each child," said Mosiello.

"We hope that families don’t feel a need to sit at their child’s bedside every second, but instead have a chance to pay their bills that may have been piling up, spend time with the rest of their family, or even go back to work," said Mosiello. "Our goal is to give families a peace of mind."

Today, Sunshine Children's Home and Rehab Center only has 54 licensed beds, but hopes to expand their practice to aid as many suffering children as possible. The Westchester Bank is a supporter of Sunshine Children's Home and Rehab Center, as they have worked with the community since 2009 to help those who need it most.
