Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery At NWH Can Give Patients A Fresh Start

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- America's current obesity epidemic can be linked to a variety of factors, say many top health professionals. Doctors recognize a number of influencers contributing to unhealthy weight levels that are outside an individual’s control. These include political forces shaping food production, the changing nature of the North American diet, genetics and evolution. “Steps that prevent obesity do not work to cure obesity,” said Dr. Mitchell Roslin, Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Program at Northern Westchester Hospital.

Many of those suffering from obesity can find lasting help, thanks in part to surgical weight loss. At Northern Westchester Hospital, patients have several choices in surgical weight loss procedures: laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, a sleeve gastrectomy, lap band surgery or biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch, with pyloric valve preservation. Each involves manipulating the stomach and sometimes the intestines. All surgeries require comprehensive pre-surgery preparation and evaluations, and a commitment to a change of eating habits.

With any surgery, there are associated risks. “It’s important that our patients fully understand the pros and cons of each procedure for their unique condition and goals, and understand and commit to changes in behavior,” said Dr. Amanda Messina, a bariatric surgeon.

That’s why Northern Westchester Hospital offers a free seminar at the Hospital and online. "We want to see you succeed, and will follow you for years to come," said Messina. Patients learn how to follow through with healthy eating and exercise.

Weight loss surgery does not take the place of lifestyle changes, but it may be a jumpstart to a healthier lifestyle for people with obesity. Post-surgery, patients must be dedicated to leading a lifestyle with healthy eating and regular exercise. “Keeping the weight off requires real dedication,” said Roslin. “Otherwise they risk the weight coming back.”

For many with obesity, surgical weight loss can be a fresh start. In addition to improving the emotional and psychological consequences of being obese, surgery can effectively treat conditions associated with being severely overweight such as hypertension, sleep apnea, Type II diabetes, joint disease and even infertility.

When it comes to deciding a weight loss procedure, it's important for patients to know they have options. The type of surgery depends on an individual's specific conditions and goals. That's why it's recommended that patients meet with a bariatric surgeon to understand the options. This helps set pre- and post-operative goals, and ensures the best approach is taken for the individual.
