MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. - The Thornwood-Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce and Hawthorne Fire Department have joined forces as the local business and first responder communities present the inaugural Mount Pleasant Street Fair & Car Show Sunday, Aug. 17.
The roads in Mount Pleasant will be closed on Elwood Avenue in Hawthorne, from Gordo's Restaurant to Cross Street for the Street Fair, while the Car Show will take place at the Hawthorne Train Station.
"We expect 150-200 cars in the show," said Aimee Nichols of the Chamber of Commerce, owner of Berger Hardware. "All along Elwood Avenue, our local businesses are having tables and tents set up to showcase their goods and services. In the middle of everything we will have three large air rides set up for the kids to enjoy."
The event will also include lots of food, giveaways, and local businesses will be doing everything from teaching kids how to make soap (Kensico Soap Bar) to providing child safety identification cards (Pasquale Palumbo, a local insurance agent).
"We are excited some of our local organizations (Hawthorne F.D./Thornwood-Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce) are hosting an event that can gather Mt. Pleasant residents together to enjoy good food, friends and fun," Town supervisor Joan Maybury said. "We are hoping for sunny skies and lots of smiles."
Sal Pennele of the Hawthorne Fire Department helped create the idea for the event which grew out of the weekly "Cruise Night Car Show" at the Rose Hill Shopping Center.
"(The car show) evolved into turning into a community day, which is something we have all spoken about for many years," Nichols said. "At that point, Sal asked us to get involved from the Chamber of Commerce to help get the businesses to support the event. The Chamber is made up of business owners from town. It just kind of grew from there. We are hoping it continues to grow and will be an annual event that everyone looks forward to."
In the event of inclement weather, the rain date is Sunday, Aug. 24.
