PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Denise Treco has always wanted a business of her own, and several years ago she finally had the business plan, the capital to start it and the perfect location.

“I decided to jump in and go for it,” she said. “Of course, my timing was not so great.”

Treco opened the Flour and Sun Bakery on Washington Avenue in Pleasantville four years ago just before the Great Recession hit. A challenging start became even harder when the economy turned, but Treco says she's now busier than ever as the bakery celebrates its fourth anniversary.

“Everyone said that it would be very exhausting and that it would be a lot of hard work—and it is,” she said. “It's a lot of work, but I do love it, thank God.”

The bakery offers cupcakes and other desserts in 150 flavors. Treco says the shop's done a lot more catering, cupcake decorating parties, birthday parties and weddings since they opened. The introduction of cake pops has also been a big hit. Soon she hopes to launch a care package program for college students—a test run helped get the bakery ready for the fall, Treco said.

“I think we're always looking for an interesting flavor, an interesting combination, something new,” she said.

One thing Treco's learned since opening the bakery is that starting a business takes perseverance.

“At the end of the day you have to try to keep going,” she said.
