New CrossFit Gym In Pleasantville Plans September Opening

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Tommy Carter and John Nannariello started talking a year ago about opening their own gym. In early September, the long-time friends will make their vision a reality when doors for CrossFit Immortal swing open at 72 Memorial Plaza in Pleasantville.

Both men became CrossFit proponents in recent years. CrossFit combines all elements of exercise, including endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, balance, accuracy and agility. Carter and Nannariello have become CrossFit certified and will be the lead trainers at the business.

“I had heard a lot about it and I was in awe of what these people do,’’ said Carter, who worked for an executive search firm before making the career transition. “I made my way to a CrossFit gym and became hooked on it. I saw immediate results, not only in my physical shape but all other aspects of my health improved.”

Nannariello, a former general contractor, lost more than 50 pounds when he committed to CrossFit. He progressed so rapidly he competed in the CrossFit Open competition earlier this year and finished in the top 15 percent of out nearly 6,000 contestants in the Northeast region.

“I loved being in the construction business and working for my father,’’ Nannariello said. “But I felt it was time for a change. This is the exact work that I wanted to change to.”

The co-owners believe the Pleasantville area is a perfect spot for their business. Both men attended Westlake High School and have community ties.

“We’ll have one hour classes and it’s a full workout,’’ Carter said. “The typical class begins with a warm up, then a strength or skill focus, followed by a high intensity workout including any combination of gymnastic movements, weightlifting, kettlebells, running, rowing and any other fun stuff we can come up with. All the workouts are programmed by John and I. Every single day, there’s a new workout. It constantly varies, which causes your body to always be guessing. That’s how we get results.”

Carter and Nannariello began discussions a year ago, and made the decision earlier this year to launch the business.

“Everything just clicked at once,’’ Nannariello said. “The spot was perfect, and we thought Pleasantville and Mount Pleasant needed one of these places. The partner was perfect, and CrossFit is on the rise right now. I don’t see it slowing down. It’s a great sport, whether you want to get fit and compete or just improve your health.”

Nannariello has been doing most of the renovation on the facility, which was a former dance studio. The facility will be open seven days a week beginning at 6 a.m. on weekdays. Carter said they hope to open on Sept. 3.

“It’s pure excitement,’’ Carter said. “Opening this gym doesn’t feel like work. That’s how I know I found the right fit. I truly enjoy doing this and making people better and improving their health. There are butterflies, but they are good butterflies.”
