Mount Pleasant Native Does Business As 'Smart Nanny'

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- While working as a nanny in 2013, friends would ask Mount Pleasant native Lisa DeRienzo how they, too, could find similar jobs.

"I could not find a teaching job at the time and was nannying for a great family. Friends and family in the similar situation started asking me to help them find nanny jobs as well so the idea of ASmartNanny.com was born," she recounted.

The strictly online business matches families with nannies, a business model that means clients who come from Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield Counties do not interact with DeRienzo in person, rather through emails.

Aptly named, her company's niche is that it provides college-educated babysitters, nannies and tutors to families. In addition, there is a babysitting service, it's "most popular" offering.

The way it works is parents sign up for service like you would a gym membership. They choose monthly, semi-annual or annual options for nannies and babysitters.

The nannies are experienced, local, college-educated drivers with clean backgrounds, said DeRienzo. "I run the background checks myself and check at least three positive references before sending a nanny to meet with a family."

DeRienzo, 32, has been working with children for 20 years and has learned a lot from them.

"I think I have seen it all. I am also a teacher so I have been working directly with children for the past 10 years as well as babysitting for the past 20," she said.

The only challenge she cited of running her business is that "Sometimes families get a little impatient because they want to find a nanny right away but it takes time. I do everything myself so that it's done right."

In 2015, A SmartNanny.com was voted Best of Westchester 2015 by Westchester Magazine readers, she noted.
